Position overview:

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as a key member of the organization’s executive leadership team, responsible for ensuring sound financial management, strategic planning, and fiscal accountability across all areas of the organization. This role oversees all financial functions—including budgeting, accounting, reporting, and risk management—while also leading the organization’s grants and contracts portfolio totaling approximately $5 million annually.

The CFO ensures compliance with federal, state, municipal, and private funding requirements, leads grant writing and reporting efforts, and provides financial guidance that supports the organization’s mission, sustainability, and growth.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position oversees the Finance and Grant team which includes:

• Finance and Accounting Director
  • Staff Accountant
• Senior Grant Manager
  • Grant and Compliance Manager

Components of the role will focus upon:

Financial Leadership and Strategy

• Serve as a strategic financial leader to the executive team and Board of Directors on all financial matters.
• Lead long-term financial planning, forecasting, and budgeting processes aligned with strategic goals.
• Develop and oversee financial policies, internal controls, and risk management systems.
• Present clear, accurate financial reports and analysis to the staff, Board and Finance Committee.
• Act as Liaison to Finance and Audit Board Committees
• Supervise all accounting operations, including payroll, accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, and audits (both financial and funding).
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting standards.

Grant Management and Compliance

• Manage a grant portfolio of approximately $5 million from federal, state, municipal, corporate, and foundation sources.
• Oversee all financial aspects of grant administration, including budgets, reporting, tracking, and compliance.
• Collaborate with program and development teams to develop budgets with grant objectives and deliverables.
• Serve as the primary compliance officer for all grant and contract agreements, ensuring timely submissions and adherence to funder requirements.
• Monitor restricted and unrestricted funds, ensuring proper allocation and documentation.
• Coordinate with external auditors and funders on financial reviews and audits.

Grant Writing and Fund Development

• Partner with program and development teams to identify, write, and submit competitive grant proposals.
• Develop budgets and narratives for new and renewal grants.
• Ensure proper tracking of proposal outcomes and high-quality stewardship and communication with funders.
• Maintain systems to monitor grant deadlines, renewal opportunities, and reporting calendars.

Team Leadership and Collaboration

• Lead and mentor the finance and grants management team, fostering a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with program, operations, and development departments to align financial goals with mission outcomes.
• Serve as staff liaison to the Board Finance and Audit Committees.

Along with the above, we would also expect you to have:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required; Master’s degree or CPA preferred.
• Minimum of 8 years of progressive financial leadership experience, ideally in a nonprofit organization with multiple funding streams, including public funding, with a minimum annual operating budget of $10M.
• Demonstrated experience managing complex grants and contracts, including federal and state funding.
• Proven success in grant writing and financial reporting for private, corporate, and government funders.
• Experience with nonprofit accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage Intacct, Blackbaud) and grant management systems.

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods to complete work.
• Occasional standing, walking, bending, or reaching as necessary to perform routine office tasks.
• Ability to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally (such as files, office supplies, or small equipment).
