Job Summary

This position is located within the Auraria Campus Police Department (ACPD) on the Auraria Campus. This is a dynamic area surrounded by three sporting arenas and a vibrant urban Downtown experience. The ACPD provides comprehensive law enforcement services, including emergency, non-emergency, technical, and communications support to the Auraria Campus Community as State of Colorado Peace Officers. This role requires rotating shift work, and candidates must be willing and able to work various shifts.

Essential Job Functions

The Police Officer I position responds to a variety of civil matters as well as enforces applicable local, state, and federal laws. Duties include, writing reports; performing preliminary investigations; collecting evidence; responding to various alarms; detecting and arresting wrongdoers; and community policing activities. Auraria Campus Police employ various policing methods including foot, bike and vehicle patrol. Additionally, officers perform crowd management functions at a large number of special events.

This position is also required to participate in ongoing training in a variety of law enforcement practices and techniques. Police Officers at AHEC must qualify in firearms proficiency on a quarterly basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

• Must hold valid and current Colorado P.O.S.T certification.
• One (1) year of experience in a Police Department.
• Valid unencumbered Colorado drivers license.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Provide full responses to all required supplemental questions. Your answers will be used as part of the application screening.

Preferred Qualifications

• One year of experience as a Police Officer on the Auraria Campus.

• Some Misdemeanors
• Acquiring more than seven points in the last year and/or more than 12 points within the last two years on a driver's license.
• Alcohol/drug related traffic convictions in the last three years and repeat alcohol/drug convictions after the age 18 within the last then (10) years.

Additional Special Requirements

• Positions are subject to a background investigation in accordance with the administrative procedures of the State Personnel Director. Physical and psychological evaluations are required in accordance with section 24-31-303 (5)(b), C.R.S.
• In order to be eligible to apply applicants must possess a valid and unencumbered Colorado Driver License.

Conditions Of Employment

• Due to the inherent ability of this position to impact the safety and security of the Auraria Campus, candidates must be able to communicate fluently in English with others (written and verbally).
• This position requires pre-employment background and credit investigation (personal and employment history). Applicants must submit to a complete background investigation that will include a personal and employment background check for various security clearances including Colorado Crime Information (CCIC) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) security clearance. This investigation will include a polygraph interview, fingerprint check and drug screen.
• Any offer of employment is contingent on the successful passing of a physical and psychological examination by a licensed doctor or health care facility. The health care facility will be selected or approved by the Auraria Higher Education Center in order to determine whether the prospective employee can perform the essential functions of the job.
• Applicants must not have any felony convictions, domestic violence history or alcohol offenses within the last (3) years.
• Applicants must not have received a failing result on a psychological evaluation within the preceding 12 months.
• Applicants must not have experience involuntary termination from any position within the last preceding 12 months.

Per the requirements of the Step Pay Program implemented on July 1, 2024, any State employee must be paid a rate that is equal to or greater than the appropriate step pay rate within their classification’s pay range based on completed years in their current class series as of June 30.
